From the Desk of the CEO

Each year, Texas RE’s leadership takes stock of the organization’s current trajectory, trends within the industry, and looming challenges facing electric reliability, and uses that to inform the development of the coming year’s Corporate Goals and Critical Challenges. That document in turn guides all of Texas RE’s activities during the year with specific targets against which we can measure our success. We’ll report those results for 2024 in our annual report that will be published later this month, but we’re already hard at work implementing our plan for 2025.

Our first goal is always supporting the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) Enterprise model. As one of the six Regional Entities overseeing industry compliance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Standards, Texas RE is committed to supporting a seamless compliance experience for registered entities regardless of which Region(s) they operate in. The ERO Enterprise’s Long-Term Strategy provides a roadmap for NERC and each of the Regions to follow with collaboration as its central defining theme.

Texas RE believes the key to attracting, cultivating, and maintaining a modern workforce is to ensure that employees feel welcomed and able to speak their minds in a collaborative environment. This is why fostering an outstanding workplace culture is our second corporate goal. It is one that we’ve been pursuing very intentionally in recent years, and in 2025 we’ll continue celebrating accomplishments, promoting continuous improvement, and leveraging internal committees to coordinate staff activities.

Our third corporate goal for 2025 is new and reflects the industry trends I mentioned earlier. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a new program that we started at the end of 2023, and in 2024 it got underway in earnest so that we could proactively understand and mitigate organizational risks. In the relatively short time since being stood up, our ERM program has altered a number of core work processes at Texas RE and has helped us to understand the potential risks involved in the way we do business day to day. Because of its systemic impact, this program is a major priority for 2025 and beyond.

The last goal for 2025 is the most open-ended and is the one that requires support from our stakeholders to accomplish. The challenges and opportunities posed by our evolving grid are many. Mitigating the risks associated with the continued proliferation of intermittent resources like solar and wind, harnessing the potential of newly scaled battery technology, and continuing to address the Texas Interconnection’s transmission needs are just a few of the hurdles posed to our industry at large. Throughout 2025 Texas RE will continue to host regular outreach events tailored to these specific needs, including our Evolving Grid Workshop that will take place in July. Our full 2025 outreach calendar is available here.

Here’s to another successful year of electric reliability in the Texas Interconnection and across North America.

Reliably,
Jim Albright
